COCORIOKO has decided to publish in full the statement of the President of the UN Security Council on Sierra Leone today. The Western media has started to twist and distort the statement. Today, REUTERS has a very misleading headline : “UN WARNS SIERRA LEONE”. Readers can see that there is no warning in the statement. The UN Security Council is the organization responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security. The Council was only advising all stakeholders in Sierra Leone —not only the government– about the importance of ensuring that the peace and security of the nation are maintained during this crucial year of elections. In tandem with the Working Methods of the UN, the President of the Security Council makes the concluding statement days or few weeks after the Security Council has met on a country. It is this concluding statement that has been released. A new front is not being opened on the issue of Michael Shulenberg. But the divisive Western media will do everything to make it seem so by singling out the portions of the statement dealing with the Schulenberg allegations.
The Council noted some achievements Sierra Leone has made as a nation , in the areas of “national reconciliation, the promotion of gender equality and the preparation for national and local elections on 17 November 2012.” The Western media and their collaborators in Sierra Leone , who have a nose only for negativity and perpetuating stereotypes about third world countries , are not going to mention this commendation by the President of the Security Council . It is too positive to be NEWSWORTHY. If it had been negative, it could have led to banner headlines . In fact, these positive portions will not be mentioned in their distorted news stories on the statement. It is a crying shame that the western media are nothing but weapons of mass deception against striving third world nations.
We want our readers to read and digest the statement themselves and make their own unbiased judgements about it so that the western media will not fool them with their selective analyses of such statements . The UN, in the statement, reaffirmed “ its support for continuing efforts to consolidate peace in that country.” The UN will continue to stand by Sierra Leone as she strives to consolidate peace and national reconciliation as well as rebuild the country socio-economically and politically.
