In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we profile Father Cornelius Mulcahy, an Irishman who contributed much to Sierra Leonean education and sports. The history of St. Edwards Secondary School and the development of sports in Sierra Leone would be incomplete without the name of Father Cornelius Mulcahy. Father Mulcahy arrived in Freetown in 1917 and was initially sent to the Catholic Mission at Serabu in the Protectorate. Though in existence since 1865, St. Edwards School was still just a primary school whose students had to apply to secondary schools of other denominations such as the C.M.S. Grammar School and the Wesleyan Boys High School.
